Head First

Last week, I was assigned to shoot a portrait of a new swimming coach at a local high school. The day before, I had just lit another portrait with three lights, but this time I tried to see what I could do with a single (direct, since I don’t have an off-camera cord) strobe.

Natrona County assistant swim coach Isaac Kalinowski poses for a portrait Jan. 12, 2012 at Natrona County High School. Kalinowski is also a former standout football player for Narona County, as well as the school’s current tennis coach and art teacher.

Sled Doggin’

I meant to post this awhile back. Got caught up with stuff, but here’s a few selects from a feature hunt I found one Saturday. Next time, I was told, I have to run dogs on a sled myself.

Denzel Douglas

This afternoon I got a quick assignment to photograph Denzel Douglas, a point guard here at Casper College who signed with Idaho and I thought it’d be another good chance to practice my on-location lighting. We only have two Dynalites here, so I had to use an on-camera 550EX to trigger the optical slaves on the Dynalites set up on either side of Denzel. Not ideal, but it worked out OK.

In case you care:
1/200 sec. @ f/13, ISO 100. Two Dynalites set on each side at 1/8 power. Front fill is a direct 550EX at 1/4 power @ 50mm.

Eye Black

While working on a small story about the Wyoming football team’s equipment manager, the starting quarterback, Brett Smith, came into the equipment room to get his eye black on before the game. Thank you, access.

The Bright Lights

A few that I liked from the Wyoming State Football Championships this last weekend.

Good Game

An outtake of something I’ve see a hundred times.

Volleyball, revisited

Last week I spent a couple days photographing the state volleyball tournament here in Casper. Nothing beats a good sports feature. (Or three.)

Pine Bluffs senior Emily Baldwin gets a pregame back rub from teammate Jaden Ragsdale before the Hornets’ semifinal game against the Wright Panthers during the Wyoming High School Volleyball Championships Oct. 28, 2011 at the Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyo.

Kaycee sophomore Brekyn Hokanson, center, wipes tears from her eyes after the Lady Bucs defeated the Snake River Rattlers during their semifinal match.

Wright senior Meghan Grizzle, center, celebrates with senior Mackenzie Fuller after the Panthers defeated the Pine Bluffs Hornets during their semifinal match.

More football…

A few from a three-way tiebreaker yesterday in Douglas. Just wait till state championships in a couple of weeks…

Hot Pink Pants

A frame from a story about Katie Peters, the captain of the A’Salt Creek Roller Girls, the local Casper roller derby team. Katie was really cool to work with and a helluva derby player as well. After the first bout was over, she said to me “we usually go back there and talk about our play…some of the girls have a smoke too. You can come back if you want.”

Why yes, I think I will. No smoking, though.

A’Salt Creek Roller Girls captain Katie Peters, who’s goes by Vivien Leigh-Em-Out during derby bouts, heads out of the locker room and back to the rink after a break.

Bowling with Craig

Earlier this week, I went on a feature hunt. The Special Olympics had a tournament in town, so I went to the bowling alley and met Craig and his mother, Bonnie. I spent a few hours hanging out and it was a joy to spend the afternoon with them.

Craig Wilson celebrates after bowling a strike late in his third game during the Special Olympics doubles bowling Oct. 20, 2011 at Sunrise Lanes.

Craig and Bonnie watch as other bowlers compete.
